S.O.S. - Separation of Objective from Subjective

S.O.S. is the skill of correctly identifying whether a claim or matter is objective (factual/verifiable) or subjective (preference/opinion), and then responding appropriately to each type.

This might sound simple, but confusion between objective and subjective matters causes enormous problems: people get bullied for harmless personal preferences, factual claims get dismissed as “just opinions,” and energy gets wasted arguing about things that have no factual answer.

Two Main Categories:

Objective matters are claims about reality that can be verified or falsified through evidence. They’re not about what any individual person thinks—they’re about what is. Importantly, objectivity is fundamentally collaborative: it means that other people can make the same observation and verify whether a claim matches reality. Subjective matters are personal preferences or opinions with no factual claims attached. They’re about what someone likes, values, or prefers—and there’s no “correct” answer that can be proven with evidence.

Appropriate response to subjective preferences: Respect people’s autonomy and leave them alone (unless they’re enthusiastically inviting you to share their interest). A Note on Values and Ethics:

You might be wondering: What about moral and ethical claims? Are those objective or subjective?

This is a complex philosophical question with differing views. Some people believe moral truths are objective (discoverable through reason or grounded in facts about wellbeing). Others believe they’re ultimately subjective (based on cultural values or personal conscience). Still others believe they’re something in between.

For the purposes of this Bare Essentials guide, here’s a practical approach: Many ethical questions involve both objective facts and value judgments.

For example, “Is it wrong to lie?” involves: - Objective components: What are the consequences of lying in different situations? What does research show about trust and social cohesion? - Subjective/value components: How much do we prioritize honesty versus compassion? Are there situations where other values outweigh truthfulness?

Common Logical Fallacies

5. Anchoring Bias

What it is: The tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information you encounter (the “anchor”) when making decisions, even if that information is irrelevant or arbitrary.

Why it’s problematic: Initial numbers, suggestions, or framings disproportionately influence your judgment, even when you should ignore them.

Examples: - A shirt is marked down from $100 to $50. You think it’s a great deal because you’re anchored to the $100 price—even if the shirt was never actually worth $100 and similar shirts are normally $40. - In salary negotiations, whoever names a number first sets an anchor that influences the final outcome, even if that initial number wasn’t well-justified. - A real estate agent shows you an overpriced house first, making the next house seem more reasonable by comparison—even if it’s still overpriced.

How it affects decision-making: Anchoring bias makes you vulnerable to manipulation in negotiations, sales, and any context where someone can control what information you see first.

How to recognize it in yourself: - When making a judgment involving numbers, ask: “Am I being influenced by an arbitrary starting point?” - Try to establish your own reference points based on research rather than accepting the first number presented - Be especially cautious of “original prices” in sales—they’re often inflated specifically to create an anchor - In negotiations, do your research beforehand so you have independent anchors based on actual value

Applying Critical Thinking in Daily Life

Now that you have these tools, how do you actually use them?

Start small and build the habit. You don’t need to analyze everything you encounter—that would be exhausting and counterproductive. Instead, practice applying critical thinking in specific contexts:

When consuming news and media: - Use S.O.S. to separate factual claims from opinions - Check for logical fallacies in political rhetoric and opinion pieces - Notice your own confirmation bias and in-group bias when evaluating sources - Ask: “What evidence supports this claim? What might I be missing?”

When making decisions: - Identify the premises and conclusion of your own reasoning - Check for availability heuristic (am I overweighting dramatic examples?) - Check for anchoring bias (am I being influenced by arbitrary numbers?) - Consider what your future self would want you to decide (connects to Level 2: Long-term Thinking)

When NOT to use critical thinking:

Not everything requires deep analysis. Sometimes you need to: - Make quick decisions with limited information - Trust your intuition in areas where you have genuine expertise - Enjoy entertainment without picking it apart - Accept others’ subjective preferences without debate

The skill is knowing when critical thinking is helpful and when it’s overthinking. Generally, use it for important decisions, new information, and claims that could affect your wellbeing or others’. Don’t use it to analyze every casual conversation or to question harmless preferences.

Be patient with yourself. These skills take time to develop. You’ll catch yourself in biases and fallacies—that’s part of learning. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s gradual improvement in how you think, learn, and make decisions.

The compound effect: Each time you spot a bias in yourself, each time you recognize a fallacy, each time you separate objective from subjective, you’re strengthening these mental habits. Over time, critical thinking becomes more automatic. You’ll make better decisions, learn more effectively, and waste less energy on unproductive thinking patterns.

And because critical thinking improves how you learn, it enhances every other skill you develop. It’s a foundation that makes everything else easier.
