Techne is a free, open educational program that teaches foundational skills for personal development and community change. It covers critical thinking, psychology, emotion management, communication, systems thinking, and more—organized into three progressive levels.
Anyone who wants to understand themselves better, overcome barriers, develop practical skills that they can use in their everyday life, and create positive change. The material is accessible to both teens and adults. No prerequisites or prior knowledge required.
There’s no fixed timeline. Some people move through the Bare Essentials in a few weeks; others take months or years. You can also choose to go deeper on specific topics rather than completing everything. What matters is understanding, not speed.
No. You can complete topics at Bare Essentials and move on. You don’t need to reach Intermediate or Advanced level in every topic. Focus on what matters most to you. However, completing all of Level 1 before Level 2, and all of Level 2 before Level 3, is strongly recommended.
You can, but it’s not recommended. Each level assumes you understand the previous one. Level 2 topics reference Level 1 concepts. Level 3 builds on both. Skipping ahead often leads to confusion. Within a level, though, you can study topics in any order.
For Levels 2 and 3, absolutely. Finish them in whatever order you want, just be sure to complete each topic within a level at at least the Bare Essentials level of depth before moving on to the next level. The topics in Level 1, while you can skip around, are written with the established order in mind.
Skills build on skills. Critical thinking makes science more meaningful. Emotion management makes communication easier. Psychology helps with systems thinking. These topics are interconnected, and the structure is designed to help you build a strong foundation before tackling complexity.
Absolutely. Aside from completing the Bare Essentials of each level before moving on to the next, skip around and back in whatever way you feel like or makes sense to you. Because of the interconnected nature of the topics, you might even want to skim over some previously learned material to gain a new perspective of that topic, and deepen the learning of each topic that you’ve already covered.
Both work. All materials are designed for self-study, and many exercises can be done solo. However, some exercises work better with a partner or group, and studying together can help with motivation and accountability. The choice is yours.
You can reach out through email at hephaestus(dot)techne(at)proton.me, or the Techne community on [https://mindly.social/@hephaestus]. You can also suggest improvements if something is unclear—your feedback helps make the program better for everyone.
Not in the traditional sense. Each topic includes practice exercises to test your understanding and help you apply what you’ve learned. These are for your benefit, not for grades or certification. But if you would like a formal assessment, there are ones planned in the future.
If you’ve completed all topics in a level at Bare Essentials and can apply the basic concepts, you’re ready. The practice exercises in each topic help you gauge your understanding. There’s no formal assessment—you decide when you’re ready. But if you would like a formal assessment, there are ones planned in the future.
